Supervisor Jill Cox Emails: Episode 1 – Part 2

2. Karla Avilla is the Executive Director of the Trinity Arts Council.  She had the audacity to give public comments before the board of Supervisors.  Supervisor Cox threatens to pull funding from the Arts in retaliation for her “not getting on board” with her pet tax.  (TOT tax)

Oh, how fun. Half the people on that list hate me because of the Historic District Opt Out for Retail Cannabis. But,yes, their understanding of the County’s fiscal situation is critical. Wise move!

Know this: while Richard was here, Igathered this list of people for two evenings of conversation where I heard their perspective and went to bat for them. Richard wasgoingto take the dollars the variousgroups had previous been allotted and hand it to an outside consultant to market for the County. I encouraged him to give them another shot, requiringthey workasa unified group and produce a product for which they could demonstrate (at least projected) return on investment. That’s why I handed them all the praise I did when Karlacame to the Board with her report. (Yes, Karla, who subsequently beat me up in public when she doesn’t even live in Weaverville! That Karla.)

And so,yes, I’m alittle irritated that they can’t seem to get on board to help bolster the account from which fundsare handed to them.

Heads up: Ryan Cinelli will try to tell you that raisingthe TOT will hurt his business because he knows the bottom line of what the market will bear with regard to room rates, and so if the tax is higher, his base rate has to be lower. Does he never traveland stayanyplace else???

If they don’tget on board, and if the increased TOT doesn’t pass, I say take their funding. If they want to play hardball, Iguess that’s their choice.

Hi Letty,

Karla would be an excellent partner. I’ve heard from the Visitor’s Bureau and Visitor’s Center and potentially from the Trinity County Chamber that they may not be interested in advocating for this particular increase. However, I realize that sometimes folks make decisions without all of the information and I’d personally love to change some minds. If you’re interested in inviting representatives from our other partners, let me know and I will make sure to pass along their contacts. I will be there!

Thanks!

Hi Teckla,

Yes this is my emailand you are welcome to join us for our first TOT tax meeting that will be held at the library. I only have the room booked for an hour so it’s not an open meeting, however, I would appreciate your input and information so we can partner in this endeavor. Supervisor Cox and Supervisor Gogan are the two Board members taking the lead on this tax measure, however, I’m here to assist in any way as well. I may invite Karla Avila as well.

Since this is the first meeting from when the Board approved the tax measure, we will be discussing what other partners to include so please keep in mind our purpose is discuss next steps and strategic planning as well.

Thank you.
